Custody level: Minimum
Dan River Prison Work Farm is located on a 187.5 acre site in the west central area of Caswell County, near the county seat of Yanceyville. The prison was officially dedicated and designated operational on March 25, 1996. Effective July 1, 1998, the prison was realigned as part of the Piedmont Region in accordance with the Division of Prisons reorganizational concept.
The prison operates with a staff of 187 employees representing custody, food service, medical, programs, fiscal and administrative, and has an annual operating budget of approximately 11.4 million dollars.
The modern and unique architecture of this new facility differs markedly from traditional prison structures and was designed to be built and maintained at less cost. The physical plant consists of an administration building, central complex buildings comprised of food service, staff offices, visiting area, clothes house and central control office, and segregation building. The dormitory building is 60,000 square feet under one roof. It contains 10 inmate housing areas, 10 day rooms, 2 canteens, 10 shower and lavatory areas, medical and programs departments, barber shop, library, classroom, chaplain’s office and two control rooms.
Dan River Prison Work Farm has a current operating capacity of 570 felon and misdemeanant minimum custody adult male offenders. Inmate work assignments include 194 inmates for food service, maintenance, janitorial and other institutional jobs. Dan River Prison has 12 Community Work Program squads and 2 litter crews, the largest number of squads of any prison in the state. The squads work in Alamance, Caswell, Durham, Granville, Guilford, Person, Stokes and Rockingham counties. The squads cleaned up after hurricanes that struck the coast and tornadoes that severely damaged Rockingham County communities.
Other assignments include working on Department of Transportation road squads, working in Correction Enterprises Blanch Youth Institution metal shop, maintenance work at Caswell Correctional Center and the inmate construction program.
Work and planning continues on a joint venture between the NC Wildlife Commission and the Division of Prisons on Dan River’s property.
In cooperation with Piedmont Community College, the facility operates the Roxboro Satellite Training Center, which uses the building that once housed Person Correctional Center. The Training Center’s programs include carpentry, masonry, information systems technology, horticulture, basic electricity, and human resource development for 130 inmates.
Visitation takes place in alphabetical order three times a day on Saturdays and Sundays respectively. Inmates in segregation are allowed visitors on an appointment basis Mondays through Fridays. On October 1, 2004, a new Statewide visitation policy takes effect. It requires all visitors to complete an application prior to visitation.
