North Piedmont Correctional Center for Women in Lexington is a minimum security prison for women that opened in 1997 with a capacity to house 144 inmates.

The prison’s single, one story structure contains dormitory space for 136 inmates and a segregation unit for eight inmates. The structure has a clotheshouse, laundry rooms, nursing station, canteen, kitchen and dining hall, program activity room, conference room and office space.

Inmates may be assigned to on-site incentive wage positions that pay .40, .70 or $1. These positions include kitchen workers, canteen operator, program clerk, library clerk, dorm janitors, administration janitor, clotheshouse operators, clotheshouse assistants, maintenance workers, groundskeepers and labor service workers. There are two community work crews and a highway litter crew.

Minimum level II inmates may participate in the Community Volunteer program. They may also participate in educational programs (Asset Training, GED/ABC, and computer) facilitated by Davidson Community College.

Minimum III inmates may be assigned to work release and study release. These inmates can participate in the Home Leave program.

There are two annual motivational camps for inmates, Camp Mundo Vista and Family Day.

Programs include character education, Human Resource Development Program (HRD), Napoleon Hill, Nutrition course, Parenting, Motheread, Reentry (Transition), Tutorial Program, Ethics and Choices, Women Health issues, Domestic Violence Program Victims of Sexual abuse program, Anger management, Mood Management (clinical), Aerobics, DART 24, DART Aftercare, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Think Smart and Sign Language. The facility has a Gospel Choir, a sigh language chorus and a STEP team.

The prison programs are designed to address the needs of the “Total” woman as she prepares herself to reintegrate herself to her home and the community with a special emphasis on strengthening her bond with her children and her skills as a parent.

Special visits are set up by appointment only. The person must call the facility and contact the Assistant Superintendent for approval.
